The Most Anticipated Films of 2024: #18 – Bird

Bird is an upcoming British drama film directed by Andrea Arnold that is set to be released in 2024. Arnold, known for her impactful storytelling and unique directorial style, has previously helmed acclaimed films like Fish Tank and American Honey, as well as the Oscar-winning short film Wasp. Her projects often feature simple, evocative titles, usually with an animal-centric theme, as seen in her latest work, Bird.

The film stars Barry Keoghan, a rising star in the film industry. Keoghan’s notable performances include roles in The Batman, where he played the Joker, and The Banshees of Inisherin, which earned him an Oscar nomination. His diverse filmography also consists of The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Marvel’s Eternals, and Dunkirk. Keoghan’s decision to join Bird caused him to exit Ridley Scott‘s Gladiator 2, suggesting his belief in the project.

Joining Keoghan in the cast is Franz Rogowski, further adding to the film’s allure. Rogowski’s inclusion in the project was announced around the same time as Keoghan’s, in May 2023. Additionally, Nykiya Lynn Adams is part of the ensemble, bringing fresh talent to the screen.

The production of Bird is a collaboration between several companies, including A24, Ad Vitam, Arte France Cinéma, and House Productions. Principal photography for the film took place in various locations across the south of England, including Gravesend, Dartford, Ashford, Bean in Kent, and the Isle of Sheppey.

Despite the anticipation, specific plot details of Bird are not widely available yet. However, the combination of Andrea Arnold’s directorial prowess, the talented cast, and the backing of notable production companies position it as a film to watch out for in 2024.

Will It Be Good?

Yes. Arnold is a major talent, and the fact that she’s taken so long to make a new film suggests she’s been busy ensuring this won’t be a failure. Her earlier films like American Honey and Fish Tank show that she has a real raw talent for capturing life in all its emotional colours.

Supporting Arnold is Bary Keoghan, who has impressed in every role. It’s fair to have faith in this project. I wouldn’t be too surprised if this is one of those surprise award contenders at the end of the year. I doubt it’ll do too much at the Oscars, but expect it to get a few nominations for the BAFTAs in 2025.

Will It Be Worth Watching? Yes
