The Most Anticipated Films of 2024: #19 – The Perfumed Hill

The Perfumed Hill, directed by Abderrahmane Sissako, is set to be one of the most anticipated films of 2024. This film marks Sissako’s return to cinema ten years after his acclaimed film Timbuktu, which garnered significant recognition, including an Academy Award nomination and seven French Cesar awards.

The Perfumed Hill tells the story of Aya, a young Ivorian woman in her early thirties who, on her wedding day, says no. This pivotal decision leads her to a life-changing journey as she emigrates to Asia. There, Aya finds herself working in a tea export shop alongside Cai, a 45-year-old Chinese man. The narrative unfolds as Aya and Cai, despite the turmoil of their pasts and the prejudices they face, fall in love. This romantic drama delves into themes of cultural intersection, love, and the resilience of the human spirit against the backdrop of societal norms and expectations.

The film is a majority French production, co-produced by France (69.2%) and Luxembourg (30.8%), and is not originally in the French language. It boasts an international cast, including Nina Mélo, and its screenplay invites viewers into a world that transcends geographical boundaries, offering a unique perspective on love and human connection.

Given Sissako’s track record and the intriguing premise of The Perfumed Hill, the film is poised to be one to watch. It offers a fresh narrative that blends romance and drama while exploring the complexities of human relationships in a cross-cultural context.

Will It Be Good?

Sissako is arguably the most notable African director active right now. His work always does well in film festival circuits, and I wouldn’t expect this to be any different, but at the same time, that doesn’t mean its quality is a foregone conclusion. Sissako has made masterpieces – no doubt – but he’s also made middling works.

Yet, he is a very talented guy. There’s no reason to presume this film will be bad, even if its unlikely to reach the heights that Timbuktu did.

Will It Be Worth Watching? Probably
