The Most Anticipated Films of 2024: #13 – The Bikeriders

Where did Jeff Nichols go? From the late 2000s to 2016, Nichols was the hot young property around indie cinema, making deep films that mattered. Then, rather out of nowhere, he seemed to disappear after Loving. So where’s he been? It seems he’s just been languishing trying to get films made, and finally, after eight years, it’s looking like we’ll see a new Nichols film, The Bikeriders.

Set to premiere on June 21, 2024, The Bikeriders marks a significant moment in Nichols’ career. The film has already generated substantial buzz, thanks in part to its high-profile cast, which includes Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, and Jodie Comer. This ensemble is one of the strongest line-ups of the year, and considering Nichol’s talent for bringing raw performances out of actors, it’s exciting to imagine what we’ll see from this cast.

The movie will see

Principal photography commenced in Cincinnati, Ohio, in October 2022 and wrapped up in December of the same year. The movie’s development journey, however, was not without its challenges. Initially scheduled for a December 2023 release by 20th Century Studios, the film was delayed due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which affected the cast’s ability to promote it. This led to New Regency shopping the film to other studios and streamers, eventually resulting in Focus Features acquiring global distribution rights, with Universal Pictures handling international distribution.

The Bikeriders had its world premiere as the opening film of the 50th Telluride Film Festival on August 31, 2023. Does this make it a 2023 film? Kind of, but considering most people aren’t able to see it until 2024, we’re counting it as a 2024 release. Critics responded very positively to the film,  highlighting the lead actors’ performances and Nichols’s effective portrayal of motorcycle culture.

Nichols’ films have consistently been marked by their unique blend of drama, character depth, and a touch of the surreal, making his works stand out in the contemporary cinematic landscape. His direction here seems to follow this trend, offering a fresh perspective on the often-stereotyped world of motorcycle clubs. Considering Nichols’ standing in modern cinema, this is a must-watch.

Release Date: April 26, 2024

Will It Be Good?

Did you watch Mud? Take Shelter? Shotgun Stories? Then you’ll know Nichols is the real deal. None of his films are bad, sure. Midnight Special was a bit hokey, and Loving was a bit simple, but they’re still enjoyable to watch. Everything Nichols makes is worth it.

Considering the reviews and hype The Bikeriders was getting before its release was postponed, it sounds like this is another strong outing. Definitely check this out upon release.

Will It Be Worth Watching? Yes
