The Most Anticipated Films of 2024: #10 – Gladiator 2

Did anyone ask for a Gladiator sequel? I mean, I know Nick Cave did, but except him, who was demanding another film in that universe. It’s a marvellous film, one of the best of the year 2000, and I’ve always got time for some sword and sandals fun, but it’s a bit sad that rather than just making a new Roman film we have to brand it a sequel. Regardless of these issues, it’s always nice to see Ridley Scott busy.

The Octogenarian has been busy in 2023 annoying the French with Napoleon, but before the actors’ strike got underway, he was starting work on his sequel to the Russell Crowe-led film. It’s got a pretty impressive cast around it, with Paul Mescal taking the lead. His casting was influenced by Ridley Scott’s viewing of Mescal’s performance in the BBC Three/Hulu miniseries “Normal People.” Mescal was selected over other strong contenders like Austin Butler, Richard Madden, and Miles Teller.

Joining Mescal in this historical epic are Denzel Washington and Barry Keoghan, the latter in negotiations for the role of Emperor Geta. The cast also sees the return of Connie Nielsen and Djimon Hounsou, reprising their roles from the original film, alongside new additions like Joseph Quinn as Emperor Caracalla, Pedro Pascal, May Calamawy, and several others.

While it’s not 100% clear what the film’s story will be about, it’s supposed to revolve around Lucius, the son of Maximus’ love Lucilla. It is poised to delve deep into themes of power, legacy, and destiny in the Roman Empire. The film’s release, scheduled for November 22, 2024, is set to offer audiences a return to the grandeur and drama that made the original Gladiator so fun.

Release Date: October 4, 2024

Will It Be Good?

Yes? Every Ridley Scott historical film is fascinating, from The Duellists to the Kingdom of Heaven, but just because they’re interesting, it doesn’t mean they’re necessarily good. In a time of overblown sequels, this one does stand out as uninspired. Yet, with a good enough narrative, this could prove to be a good choice. Scott is still as sharp with age as he ever was, so his direction isn’t something to worry about here.

Mescal is also an interesting pick, and it’ll be curious to see if he’s able to take the step from indie lead to mainstream movie star with this feature. Overall, I’d say this film has a good chance of being great, but there’s always that lingering doubt that comes with commercial revisits of long-dormant franchises.

Will It Be Worth Watching? Yes. Every Ridley Scott film is worth watching. Plus there hasn’t been a Roman film in a long time.
