Is Steve McQueen the most technically talented director working today? It’s hard to think of many directors who are even close to his equal. Even his weakest film, Widows, is a technically perfect film which only lacks in the story department. He has an incredible ability to draw out outstanding performances and tell intimate stories on a wide scale.
All this makes the idea of a McQueen-directed WW2 film sound perfect!
The movie, due to be released with Apple TV+, explores the lives of various Londoners during the tumultuous years of 1940 and 1941, exploring their experiences and adjustments to a radically changing world. This period, marked by the Blitzkrieg bombing campaigns, presents a rich canvas for McQueen to weave his narrative, potentially infusing the film with intense drama and profound human stories.
The cast of “Blitz” is pretty amazing. Led by the ever-amazing Saoirse Ronan, the cast includes Harris Dickinson, Erin Kellyman, Stephen Graham, and a host of other talented actors. With his unbelievable track record, it’s not hard to lose yourself in imagination at the potential this film has.
While specifics about the plot and character details are still under wraps, it’s a safe bet that it’ll explore themes of resilience, humanity, and the indomitable spirit of people in the face of adversity. The movie has already been test-screened and has received a glowing response. Considering McQueen’s successes, it’s not hard to imagine this film will dominate at award shows next year.

Will It Be Any Good?
Yes. Every report seems to suggest this is a major work. While some audiences might be tired of the idea of another WW2 film, it’s hard to imagine McQueen would take on the subject if he didn’t find a unique angle. Beyond that, McQueen made a documentary about WW2 this year, Occupied City, which suggests this might be an area he’s passionate about.
Look at his filmography: Shame, Hunger, Widows, 12 Years a Slave, Small Axe. All these works are incredible. There’s not really anything to make me think this’ll be anything less than an incredible film.
Will It Be Worth Watching? Yes
