A Brief History of Mauritanian Cinema
The history of cinema in Mauritania can be intertwined with the work of Abderrahmane Sissako, a prominent Mauritanian-born Malian film director and producer. Sissako’s influential films often explore themes of globalisation, exile, and displacement. His movie “Waiting for Happiness” (Heremakono) was recognised at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, winning a FIPRESCI Prize, and his work “Bamako” gained significant attention in 2006. Sissako’s educational background in film was established at the VGIK (Federal State Film Institute) in Moscow from 1983 to 1989, after which he settled in France in the early 1990s.
In addition to his directorial achievements, Sissako also served as a cultural advisor to former Mauritanian head of state Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, illustrating his influence within the cultural landscape of Mauritania beyond the cinema.
