It’s taken around six months to get to this point. I’ve created each profile, decided each is terrible, and redrawn the wheel about seven times, but I’m about there now. I’m ready to start showcasing the best directors ever made.

Below are the top 10 directors of all time according to my workings. They are as close to complete as possible, but I plan to add many different elements to them.

• An essay on each director. (I’ve done this for some of the top 300 directors, but many don’t. I’ve probably finished around 100 of those. I’ve still got to re-read and edit them a few more times before I’d put them up.)
• I’m interested in putting out a section on influences and influenced. I like the idea, but I haven’t the foggiest of how to find out who influenced whom. It’s easy enough with the big directors, but by the time you get to Raul Ruiz, where do you go?
• A section on genres, themes, etc.
• Underrated, overrated films, etc., just to add more info to the directors.

All these things will be added below the top 10 list of films when I get around to it. Although I don’t want to make the pages too crowded, I’ll figure this out in the future. If you have an opinion (on anything), I’m open.

I’ll probably try to upload a top 50 or so by the end of the month, but my list will be impacted by the Sight and Sound 2022 poll coming out, so I don’t want to publish a long list just to discover I’ve got to change everything. Some director’s places are secure, so I’ve done the top 10. However, all of them could change places except Hitchcock & Bergman, who are pretty secure.
